Dental crowns in Cork

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a fitted cap that is placed over a tooth to protect and restore damaged teeth. Dental crowns can be made from a variety of materials: most commonly porcelain, ceramic and metal.

Crowns can also help:

  • Disguise a discoloured filling to improve the appearance of the tooth
  • Protect a tooth after root canal treatment to prevent future damage
  • Hold and anchor a dental bridge and partial denture firmly in place

When do I need a crown?

Your dentist might suggest a dental crown if you have:

  • A weak tooth
  • A cracked tooth
  • A broken or worn-down tooth
  • Advanced tooth decay
  • Discoloured or misshapen teeth
  • Root canal treatment
  • Dental implants
  • Partial dentures

How are crowns fitted?

The procedure usually requires two sessions at Aherne Dental Clinic. Firstly, your dentist will prepare your tooth for a crown, filing it down into a shape that best accommodates the false dental cap. Dental impressions or scans are then taken, which will be sent to a laboratory. You’ll be given a temporary crown while you wait for your final crown to be made. When it’s ready, your dentist will fit your dental cap, bonding it in place with a dental adhesive.

How long will a crown last?

This can depend on your habits, lifestyle and dental care routine. Teeth grinding can put pressure on a crown, leading to cracks and possible damage. If you know that you suffer from clenching or grinding, speak to us. We will be able to provide you with advice and possible solutions (such as a mouthguard) to help protect your crown and keep it looking its best.

How should I look after my crown?

You can treat your crown like a normal tooth – it doesn't require any specific care. The advice we give to everyone is to maintain a good home care regime, by visiting your hygienist or dental therapist regularly to have your teeth professionally cleaned – and of course seeing your dentist regularly too.
